Value Proposition – The Phantasos Triclops Is An Affordable Take on The Wandering Hours Watch

It’s amazing what microbrands are bringing to the table these days. For example, the Humism Rhizome brought kinetic art to the wrist and the Mancheront Pacer included an always ready pulsometer. The wandering hours complication is the latest trend to trickle down from the high end, expensive tier to more affordable segments. The new Phantasos Triclops represents a big step forward with an approach reminiscent of a Urwerk design like the UR-220, but with a price most enthusiasts can afford. Its rotating, rectangular cylinders and clean aesthetic make it a real standout amongst its peers.

The DWISS M3W Wandering Hour 10th Anniversary Limited Edition is a recent example of an affordable wandering hours collection from a small brand (under USD 2,000). Unlike the Phantasos Triclops, it used a more common rotating disc setup that’s a bit busier when reading the time. With rotating cylindrical rectangles, only one number is displayed at a time instead of four, making things more straightforward at a glance – not that the other is difficult to use. Referred to as hourlisks, each rotating rectangle displays the correct hour as it glides across a simple minute track at the top, from the 10 to 2 o’clock position. The track isn’t numbered, but indices are placed every five minutes. So, if the hour displayed is 10 and it’s pointing to the fourth index, it’s 10:15 (the first index represents 0). It sounds a bit complicated, but is actually simple in practice.

The base dial has a partially open-worked turbine look with the wandering hours module peeking through, while the three arms extend equally to form a kind of triangular star. Each rotating rectangle has four numbers and the hour is clearly framed within its aperture, and a pointer extends from each arm to act as the minute hand. Base dial colours include blue (Royal Blue model), black (Pitch Black model) and silver (Viridian model with green accents and Steel model with black accents). An all-black diamond-like carbon (DLC) case/dial combination is also available, called Nightwalker. The hours, minute track and brand name at the bottom with upward stripes have Super-LumiNova, and look positively futuristic at night.

The case measures 42mm in diameter and 13.5mm in height (lug-to-lug is 47.5mm), and comes in brushed, sandblasted and polished 316L stainless steel. The black DLC Nightwalker is matte. There are sharp angles and flat surfaces for a stealthy aesthetic with deep indentations at the top and bottom of each side. The case also has a sporty integrated design for either an Italian leather strap (with quick-release levers) or a steel bracelet with butterfly clasp. Straps come in black or blue (for the Royal Blue model). A double-domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating protects the dial, while a sapphire exhibition case back displays the automatic movement. The crown doesn’t screw down, but water resistance is rated at 50 metres.

Powering the Phantasos Triclops is a Miyota 90S5 automatic with a wandering hours module. It has 24 jewels, beats at 28,800vph (4Hz) with a 36-hour power reserve. The module reduces the base movement’s power reserve of 42 hours. This is part of Miyota’s Premium Automatic line and the brand adjusts it in 5 positions for an accuracy rating of +/- 10 seconds per day. Functions include central hours, minutes and seconds with no date (seconds not utilized here). It’s nicely finished and decorated with Côtes de Genève.

The Triclops models will be limited to 500 pieces per colour and individually numbered, and all come with a two-year warranty. Of course, they’re not on the level of high-end pieces from Urwerk and the like regarding finishing, in-house design and overall execution, but with an Early Bird price of just USD 648, you get a similar experience for a very affordable price. Retail will be USD 980 after the Kickstarter campaign. Shipping is expected in June 2022. Phantasos has had several successful Kickstarter campaigns and its sister brand Angles Watches has plenty of experience with wandering hours collections, so this is a safe bet to be sure.
