Over the past few years, Maurice Lacroix has been busy promoting its Aikon collection, the brand’s accessibly priced, game-changing luxury sports watch. Yet, Maurice Lacroix has also recently highlighted another important pillar of its collection, the more classic and versatile Pontos line. The brand now revisits its Pontos S Diver, a watch originally released in 2013. The new take on this compressor-style dive watch was released in the frame of an event in Dubrovnik, in the presence of Lidija Lijic, a world champion freediver solicited during the development phase.
The Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver is a modern take on the 1970s compressor-style dive watch, with a twist. This type of case was made by Ervin Piquerez SA, and featured two crowns; one to wind the movement and set the time (and date if any), and the other to operate the internal rotating bezel. This unique look was used across many brands, for example, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Longines, Hamilton or Bulova. In this instance, the crowns are positioned respectively at 2 and 3 o’clock instead of the classic 2 and 4 o’clock design. The 2 o’clock crown operating the bezel features a coloured ring completing the colourway of the watch.
If the original 2013 model was 43mm in diameter, water-resistant to 600m and featured a helium release valve, the 2023 version is more versatile. Now with a 42mm diameter, fashioned out of stainless steel or bronze, the new Pontos S Diver still features comfortable diving credentials with a 300m water-resistance, however, the HEV has been removed. The solid caseback is secured by 6 screws and embossed with the brand’s M logo.
The Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver is a watch that combines vintage elements with more modern trends, especially on the dial side. These are black-grained or white lacquered for the steel versions, and blue-grained for the bronze limited edition. The applied hours markers feature luminescent material and are more prominent compared to the previous generation. The hours and minutes hands are facetted and coated with Super-LumiNova. The minutes hand edges and the seconds hand tip are highlighted with colour. The highly raised minute track on the inner bezel adds depth and a technical touch to the watch.
Inside the new Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver is the automatic Calibre ML115. Based on the Sellita SW200-1, this ubiquitous movement brings a tried-and-tested solution. Running at 4Hz, it boasts a 38-hour power reserve. The stop-second mechanism allows for precise setting.
The Pontos S Diver steel models come with three straps: an M-branded fabric strap and two integrated rubber straps embossed with Maurice Lacroix. The bronze version comes with a blue rubber strap and a calfskin leather strap featuring a gold M logo. These straps are all fitted with quick-release spring bars allowing you to swap your straps in seconds with no tool.
The price of the new Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver is set at EUR 2,100 for the steel versions and EUR 2,650 for the bronze limited edition, which will be available in 500 pieces. More information can be found at www.mauricelacroix.com.
